Eryn and I sing the refrain to this song all the time because she really likes it. But I can never remember the words I'd learned when I was a Boy Scout. I think there are probably a thousand songs I've forgotten the words to since then, when skits and songs merited their own large three ring binder on my shelf for my troop and the Scouts I minded as a camp counselor, including "Good Old Mountain Dew" and "Take a Stick of Bamboo" (which I hated, so that's a good thing). But Eryn is also a fanatic about "Pink Pajamas", so at least I remembered the important ones. Here are the lyrics, modified for Daddy's little girl as that's how we sing it around here.
Shortnin' Bread
(Afro-American traditional)
Daddy's little girl loves shortnin', shortnin'
Daddy's little girl loves shortnin' bread
Daddy's little girl loves shortnin', shortnin'
Daddy's little girl loves shortnin' bread
Three little children layin' in the bed
Two were sick and the other 'most dead
Sent for the doctor, the doctor said
"Feed those children on shortnin' bread"
Daddy's little girl loves shortnin', shortnin'
Daddy's little girl loves shortnin' bread
Daddy's little girl loves shortnin', shortnin'
Daddy's little girl loves shortnin' bread
When those children layin' in the bed
Heard that talk about shortnin' bread
They popped up well and started to sing
Skipping 'round the room doing the pigeon wing
Daddy's little girl loves shortnin', shortnin'
Daddy's little girl loves shortnin' bread
Daddy's little girl loves shortnin', shortnin'
Daddy's little girl loves shortnin' bread
Put on the skillet
Put on the lid
Daddy's going to make some shortnin' bread
That's not all he's going to do
Daddy's going to cook us some cocoa too
Daddy's little girl loves shortnin', shortnin'
Daddy's little girl loves shortnin' bread
Daddy's little girl loves shortnin', shortnin'
Daddy's little girl loves shortnin' bread
I snuck to the kitchen, picked up the lid
I filled my pockets full of shortnin' bread
I winked at the pretty little girl and said
"Baby, how'd you like some shortnin' bread"
Daddy's little girl loves shortnin', shortnin'
Daddy's little girl loves shortnin' bread
Daddy's little girl loves shortnin', shortnin'
Daddy's little girl loves shortnin' bread
Got caught with the skillet
Got caught with the lid
Got caught with my mouth full of shortnin' bread
Six months for the skillet, six months for the lid
Six months in the jail eatin' shortnin' bread
Daddy's little girl loves shortnin', shortnin'
Daddy's little girl loves shortnin' bread
Daddy's little girl loves shortnin', shortnin'
Daddy's little girl loves shortnin' bread
Pink Pamajas
I wear my pink pajamas in the summer when it's hot
I wear my flannel nighty in the winter when it's not
And sometimes in the spring time, and sometimes in the fall
I jump between the sheets with nothing on at all...
Glory, glory hallelujah,
Glory, glory what's it to ya
Balmy breezes blowing throoough ya
With nothing on at alllllll......
